Team places first at District Land Judging
Falls City High's FFA Chapter left for Beatrice at 7:30 A.M. on Tuesday, October. Four holes, 180 students, and twenty minutes per hole – it's land judging!
Falls City's team of Eli Kuker, Jesse Vollmer, Julianne Kopf, and Kylie Bek, placed first at districts and will represent Falls City at State. The top three teams in district land judging will travel to St. Paul on November 3 for state land judging.
The students also scored well individually, considering 180 students attended this event. The top ten scores for Falls City FFA members are as follows:
- Jared Dishong and Rachel Stevens tied for second place with a score of 284 points.
- Eli Kuker placed fifth with a total of 279.
- Jimmy Jarred and Julianne Kopf tied for sixth place with a total of 266 points.
- Victoria Vollmer, with a score of 265, tied with another student from Palmyra for seventh place.
- Lisa Kopf placed thirteenth, scoring 253 points.
- Hayley McCann and Jesse Vollmer tied with two other students from Palmyra for fourteenth place with a score of 251.
- Brandon Keithley placed fifteenth with a score of 250.
The FFA members played in the dirt, found the depth, surface texture, permeability, classified the soil, and decided if the soil needed any other additional treatments. Hayley McCann, FFA Reporter said, "Most of us stayed down in the hole as long as we could, considering it was so cold. After judging, we had extra time, so the judges could calculate the results. As all kids deprived of Burger King (like us), would do, we filled up on whoppers and chocolate shakes."
Hayley also added, "We would like to thank the Weaver family for digging the practice holes for us, LeAnne Bek for driving the bus, and Mr. Miller for staying after school to help us practice."
