On Monday, March 30, four students from Lori Rech’s College American History classes attended the 11th Annual Capitol Forum on America’s Future. It was held at the State Capitol Building in Lincoln. Juniors Josh Butrick, Tonya Davis, Samantha Kendall, and Kent Stejskal represented Falls City High School at the Forum.
Students from across the state met and discussed issues that impact the future of the United States on a global scale. The discussion items included Terrorism, Immigration, Global Environmental Problems, International Trade, and Nuclear Weapons.
Students met in two sessions. The morning sessions centered on debates between students over these important issues. The afternoon session centered on “Futures.” Groups of students defended to the rest of the participants of the Forum a pre-defined “future” for the United States in World Affairs. The Forum concluded with a conversation with Nebraska’s elected officials via video conference from Washington D.C.
Capitol Forum is sponsored by the Nebraska Humanities Council, Secretary of State John Gale, Choices for the 21st Century Education Program, Watson Institute for Insternational Studies, and Brown University. |
