Melodrama invites audience participation

Cast members react as they discover Doctor Devereaux's dastardly plan to murder anyone who stands in his way.

The audience was encouraged to respond to action on the stage as Falls City High School students performed the melodrama Dogsbreath Devereaux, the Dastardly Doctor . . . OR . . . Nurses! Foiled Again! The actors entertained the crowds in the high school auditorium on Saturday, March 28, and Sunday, March 29.

The 1918 melodrama took place in the emergency room of the Hanover D. Cash Clinic, where the villian Dogsbreath Devereaux was trying to marry the widow Lotta Cash. He was then going to kill Lotta to gain access to her fortune. He conned Nurse Hilda Hatchet into helping him by making her think that they were going to marry once his plan was accomplished.

Also in the action, was a developing romance between Nurse Wendy March, the heroine of the play and unknown heiress of Lotta Cash, and Dr. Phil Good, the hero. Exotic dancer Trixie St. James also became a complication in the relationship between Nurse Ivy Dripp and Orderly Ward Helper.

A Sign Girl helped the audience with their participation by signaling when they should "Boo" for villians, "Cheer" for the hero, and "Ahhh" for the heroine.

Trying to sort out their problems are the "good guys," left to right, Kenny Frederick, Amy Dunn, Hannah Thompson, and Daniel Hagedorn.
