Seniors are reminded that scholarships
are posted on FCHS Guidance website
Seniors should check the Schoarship page on the Guidance website (http://www.fctigers.org/High%20School/hsGuidancescholarships.htm) often because new scholarships are posted all the time. By the end of the year, there are usually over one hundred opportunities for scholarships and grants to help defer the cost of college.
One of the new opportunities posted this week is the Susan T. Buffett Foundation scholarship for students attending public schools of higher education in Nebraska. While the primary criterion is financial need, ALL students who are planning on attending any are encouraged to apply. Sara Barker, FCHS counselor, said that the scholarship is for $3200 PER semester with another $400 PER semester for books. It is not only for graduating seniors, but it is also for current college students working on undergraduate degrees. The foundation has not set a limit as to the number of scholarships they will award; but last year $17 million set aside for the scholarships was unawarded because there were not enough applications.
Another opportunity that seniors are encouraged to take advantage of is the EducationQuest and NSLP Financial Literacy Online Course scholarship. For each of the four courses they complete (each course takes less than 30 minutes), seniors get "a chance" to have their name drawn; so they have four chances EVERY MONTH until May! The scholarship is for $500, and 26 scholarships will be awarded. Once a senior wins, their name is removed. The sooner the seniors get their courses taken, the better their chances are to win since more students will take the courses each month. Their names stay in "the bucket" for the next drawing, (i.e. December), BUT more students will be "applying" each month that passes. The courses will also help students learn more about financial responsibility. |
