Falls City South Elementary School houses grades 3-5 with an average student enrollment of 200 students. Each grade is divided into three sections with an average class size of 18 students. The District's Life Skills classroom is located in South School. South School is accredited through the AdvancED Accreditation Commission, the national commission that confers the North Central Association Commission on Accreditation and School Improvement (NCA CASI) accreditation seal. The reading, math, science and social studies curriculum is aligned to the Nebraska State Standards and the NeSA Standards Assessments are completed at all grade levels in the areas of reading and math to track proficiency.
South School teachers use the Response to Intervention (RtI) model to track, discuss, and plan for appropriate supports for students with concerns in the areas of reading fluency and comprehension. Teachers meet once a per month per grade level. All South School students have been screened using the DIBELS assessment. This assessment allows us to keep track of student progress and prescribe support as needed according to the team discussion and our decision rules.
There are 38 employees working in the building during some part of the day. South Elementary School offers physical education, music, a guidance counselor, speech and language therapy, a nurse, and a media specialist. On a daily basis, our food service program offers a hot breakfast and lunch program.
The original building was constructed in 1956. A media center surrounded with classrooms was added several years later. In 2003, the heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning systems were renovated.
