Kottich Family

Kindergartners from Falls City North Elementary School lined up March 26th to take their pick from the selection of books purchased for them by the family of Diana Kottich, a former kindergartner teacher who died in 2014 from ovarian cancer.

Steve Kottich was joined by his daughters, Aliza Stremlau, her husband Nick, and their three children: Harrison, Parker, and Sylvie of Lincoln, and Erin Waller, her husband Doug, and their two children: Stella and Sam of Falls City. This year was extra special as Sam, who is in kindergarten received his book from his Grandma. Steve said in a message to all kindergartners, “I want you all to promise me that you will take your books home and read them with someone.”

The Diana Kottich Memorial Fund has purchased books for all kindergarten students at North School and at Sacred Heart from the Scholastic Book fair for this 7th annual event as a tribute to Diana’s passion for reading. Diana loved selecting books from the Book Fair both for her classroom and her grandchildren.  Each book is marked with a memorial book plate in her honor.

Elementary librarian, Jessica Howard, stated these books have three benefits. Each kindergarten student gets their own book to enjoy and the library raises needed funds for new books from the profit of the sale. In addition, this purchase made through Scholastic All For Books Donation Program is matched by Scholastic dollar for dollar in books to be distributed to children through the Kids in Need Foundation. Jessica also stated it was nice to be able to get together for this special event again this year, as last year we were unable to meet, only distribute the books because of covid restrictions. The kids are always so appreciative and excited to receive their new book.
